“On the night of April 19, 1958, at a meeting extending into the small hours of April 20th, our Youth Symphony was born,” wrote Ruth Cady Austin, in a synopsis of the history of the Youth Symphony of Kansas City. The organization initially consisted of one orchestra of 80 musicians. Today, the Youth Symphony of Kansas City comprises of four full orchestras, and more than 360 young musicians participate annually.

The Carlsen Center is thrilled to join in the celebration of the 60th anniversary of the Youth Symphony of Kansas City with a special concert in Yardley Hall. Concert will be performed by Academy and Symphony Orchestras.

Drew Petersen has been chosen as soloist for the 60th Anniversary Gala. He will perform Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto #2 in C Minor, Op. 18. Other works on the program will be announced soon. Petersen was recently named one of 2018’s Avery Fisher Career Grant recipients.
